Women's Summer Bible Study
Join us this summer for a 6-week study entitled “Singing through the Psalms” taught by Carrie Everitt. One commentator frames the book of Psalms as the “virtual Temple for the people of God in Exile.” The original audience was in Exile in Babylon and had no Temple because it had been destroyed. They couldn’t SEE the presence of God like they had before in Egypt, at the Red Sea, at Mt. Sinai, through the wilderness or in the Promised Land. They could not see and touch the very concrete things the kindness of Yahweh had gifted them with throughout their formation as a people. Those things were gone because of their idolatry and sin….but, they could read about it, and they could sing about it! Sound familiar? So often our lives on this side of the cross, feel like our own unique Exile. We live between the time of Jesus’s first and second coming. Our salvation has been secured and Christ’s church is on mission as we await our King’s return and the restoration of all things. Until then, we live lives here in the already and not yet and together we wait and sing the songs of Psalms as our own functional guidebook [songbook]. Each week we will work our way through a selected Psalm and study its content, scope and connection to the Gospel story. Each week we will also sing the Psalm we study in an effort to fashion and lay the truth of God’s word down deep in our bones as daughters of the King. Homework will be given but will not be essential to participation so please come regardless. Homework will be available in Cornerstone for each upcoming week.
